World number one Jannik Sinner powered into the US Open quarter-finals on Tuesday with a ruthless demolition of Alexander Bublik, just hours after the Kazakh had jokingly described the defending champion as an "artificial intelligence" player.
Sinner, 24, needed only one hour and 21 minutes to dismiss the 23rd seed 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 - the second-quickest win in the men's singles draw this year. The result stretched his unbeaten run at hardcourt Grand Slams to 25 matches, underlining why he remains the man to beat in New York.
Bublik, one of just two men to have defeated Sinner this season, doubled down on his pre-match description by commenting "AI" on the US Open's official Instagram post moments after the contest. At the net, he smiled and admitted with a laugh: "You're so good, this is insane. I'm not bad, like what the f**."*
Sinner, meanwhile, suggested fatigue played a role in his opponent's performance. "He had a very tough match the last match, today he didn't serve as well as he usually serves, and I broke him early," Sinner said. "Overall, I'm very happy."
