Bengal college professor in viral classroom ‘wedding’ video says it’s affecting students’ mental health

In the eye of a storm for featuring in a viral classroom wedding video, a professor at the Psychology Department of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKUAT) on Thursday (January 30, 2205) said that the episode is affecting her students.

“This [the viral video] has defamed me. Even though I have handled the matter, it is affecting students. The mental health of the students is being severely affected,” the professor said in a video statement released on Thursday.

She urged people to refrain from sharing the viral video on social media. “This will affect the future of the children [students]. Have you thought about them even once? What will happen to them?” the professor said.

The video of the woman professor went viral on social media on Tuesday. The video shows the professor wearing a red Banarasi saree and a garland of flowers. A student is seen applying vermilion to her forehead. A number of students can be seen cheering in the video.

Part of a play

The professor said that the wedding scene was part of a play in the “freshers” programme and alleged that there was a conspiracy behind the release of the video. “A fellow professor is behind the video. He wants to become the head of the Applied Psychology department. That’s why he wants to remove me,” she said. Soon after the video surfaced online, the university authorities directed that she should go on leave.

Acting Vice-Chancellor of MAKUAT Tapas Chakraborty stated that the matter was being taken seriously, and a committee had been formed to investigate. He said that the professor had explained that it was part of a demonstration.

“A lot has happened. I request you with folded hands. Stop all this. Stand by me. Report the video. Do not share it again,” she urged people.
