Body of third victim recovered from Visvesvaraya canal a day after car plunges into canal

A day after a car carrying four persons plunged into the Visvesvaraya Canal, the Fire and Emergency Services Department personnel fished out the body of the third victim on Tuesday.

The victim was identified as Peer Khan. The rescue personnel located his body at a distance of about one km from the spot where the car went down.

The incident occurred when the four persons were travelling from Pandavapura toward Mandya. The car veered off the road and fell into the canal near Tibbanahalli in Mandya taluk on Monday.

Nayaz, one of the four persons, managed to escape soon after the incident, while the remaining three drowned in the waters. The search operations were hampered by the strong currents where the water level was 30 feet deep. However, the district administration authorities asked the engineers of the Irrigation Department to stop the release of water from the KRS reservoir to the canal to facilitate the search operations. It took about six to eight hours for the water flow at the accident spot to subside.

Raghavendra, chief fire officer, Mandya, said, “The body of Fayaz was first retrieved from the waters. Later, a crane was pressed into service to lift the car out of the canal. Then, the body of another victim, Aslam, was found in the rear seat of the vehicle.”

The operation was called off on Monday at around 8 p.m. The personnel resumed the search on Tuesday and found the body of the third victim, Peer Khan.

Three of the four persons died in the incident.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Mandya Kumar said the Visvesvaraya Canal flows through a total of 560 km across the district, and necessary steps will be taken to erect safety barricades at accident-prone and blackspots at the earliest.
