Chennai Metro Rail to stop top-up of smartcards and monthly parking passes

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will entirely switch to usage of Singara Chennai Cards or National Common Mobility Cards from April 1, 2025. Top up of contactless smart cards will be stopped in all stations in a phased manner, according to a press release.

While CMRL has been selling only Singara Chennai Cards or National Common Mobility Cards in a full-fledged manner for some time now, commuters who had the contactless smartcards were able to use and add money to it for their daily journeys thus far. But this is set to change.

In a first step, in stations including New Washermanpet, Kaladipet, OTA-Nanganallur Road, Kilpauk, Egmore, Tiruvottiyur Theradi, Shenoy Nagar, Tiruvottiyur, Nandanam, Little Mount and Meenambakkam, commuters cannot top up the contactless smart cards.

Commuters who have been using this card can exhaust the remaining value in the card and buy the National Common Mobility Card or travel using other ticketing options including QR Codes and WhatsApp ticket. The top-up will be gradually stopped in other stations too in the coming weeks.

Discontinuation of monthly parking passes

Since there has been a high demand for parking spaces, CMRL has decided to stop issuing monthly passes for parking vehicles from February 1, 2025, the release said. Commuters will have access to parking slots based on first come first serve basis. For commuters who are in possession of these passes can use them until the expiry of the validity of the pass.
