Padma awardee Cheruvayal Raman, a rice farmer and custodian of traditional seeds, will be conferred the title of ‘Professor of Practice’ by Kerala Agricultural University.
The announcement was made by Agriculture Minister and University Pro-Chancellor P. Prasad during the university’s 34th foundation day celebrations on Saturday.
The Minister stated that the title aims to facilitate the sharing of Mr. Raman’s vast experiential knowledge with farmers, students, and researchers. He will conduct sessions at the Ambalavayal Agricultural Research Centre, other university research centres, and his own farm. His benefits and entitlements under this role will be determined in accordance with university regulations, and the position will be valid for one year.
Mr. Raman is known for his commitment to preserving traditional rice varieties through natural farming methods, avoiding chemical fertilizers and pesticides while maintaining soil health.
The Minister had earlier intervened in response to reports of difficulties faced by Mr. Raman. Additionally, he had previously served as a member on the university’s General Council, according to a KAU release.
