Liverpool took a significant win in the Premier League on Sunday, August 31 with a 1-0 victory against Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday, thanks to a spectacular late free kick from Dominik Szoboszlai.
With the game looking set to end goalless, Szoboszlai struck in the 83rd minute after Martin Zubimendi fouled Curtis Jones. From around 25 yards out, the Hungarian midfielder whipped his shot off the inside of the post and into the net, sparking huge celebrations from the home crowd, who chanted “Champions!”
It was a moment of pure quality in a game where both teams had largely cancelled each other out. Arsenal, unbeaten in their first two matches, came to Anfield hoping to end their poor recent record at the ground. But they struggled to create clear chances, with Liverpool’s defence standing firm.
Liverpool thought they had gone ahead earlier in the second half when Hugo Ekitike bundled in after David Raya spilt Florian Wirtz’s shot. However, VAR ruled the goal out, with Cody Gakpo adjudged offside in the build-up.
Szoboszlai, normally an attacking midfielder, had been filling in at right-back, but his strike was worthy of Trent Alexander-Arnold himself. It was his first goal of the season and capped a strong start for the champions, who now have three wins from three games.
For Arsenal, defeat was a setback after opening the season with two victories. It was also their first goal conceded and stretched their winless run at Anfield to more than a decade, with their last win there coming in 2012.
Elsewhere in the league, Manchester City’s poor start continued with a 2-1 defeat away to Brighton. It was City’s second straight loss and raised questions about whether Pep Guardiola’s side can rediscover the consistency that has made them serial winners.
At Anfield, however, the story was Liverpool’s late breakthrough. With both sides tipped to challenge for the title, Szoboszlai’s strike not only earned three points but also sent a message that Liverpool remain the team to beat this season.
