Elderly couple return home, maintenance tribunal issues order for their protection

An elderly couple at Ayiroor, near Varkala, who were not allowed inside the house by their daughter have returned there. An order providing for their protection has been issued.

The police have also registered a case against the daughter and her husband.

Minister for Social Justice R. Bindu had directed the Social Justice director and the Revenue Divisional Officer (Maintenance Tribunal) to probe the incident and take action, including ensuring the protection of the couple Sadasivan and Sushma.

The couple had sold off their house and used the proceeds to help their daughter with another house. They lived there on the understanding that they would be looked after. Following some disagreement between the couple and their daughter, the couple had complained to the police. After the police intervened, a compromise was reached. The couple had also complained at the Collectorate, following which all three had attended a hearing. It was after returning from the hearing that their daughter refused to allow them inside the house, the Ayiroor police said.

A 2019 agreement provided for the accommodation of the couple in the house they currently lived in, Dr. Bindu said in a Facebook post.

The maintenance tribunal ordered that the daughter and son-in-law should not create any hurdles in peaceful life of the couple. The couple’s three children should deposit the maintenance of ₹10,000 that they together give in the bank accounts of their parents before the 10th of every month.

The children should take care of the parents’ food, clothes, medicine, and treatment equally and ensure their protection and welfare.

If the order was not followed, action would be taken as per the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007

To prevent further complaints, the maintenance tribunal tasked the Ayiroor station house officer with visiting the house and ensuring the welfare of Sadasivan and Sushma.

The Ayiroor police said the daughter was no longer living at the house,
