The election to 33 municipal bodies, including eight municipal corporations, in Haryana will be held on March 2, as per the schedule announced by the State Election Commissioner Dhanpat Singh on Tuesday. The counting of votes will take place on March 12.
Besides the municipal corporations — Gurugram, Manesar, Faridabad, Hisar, Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak and Yamuna Nagar — four municipal councils and 21 municipal committees will also go to the polls.
By-election to the mayor’s posts for Ambala and Sonepat Municipal Corporations, and three presidents and three members to various municipal committees and councils will also be held simultaneously.
While the notices for inviting the nominations will be published on February 5, the nomination papers can be presented from February 11 to 17. The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held on February 18 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 19.
Poll date in Panipat
However, the Panipat Municipal Corporation will go to polls on March 9 with the revision of the voters’ list still pending. The nomination papers will be accepted from February 21-27 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 1.
Seats of mayor in corporations and president in municipal councils/municipal committees will be filled up through direct elections.
As many as 45,26,227 voters, including 21,23,072 women, will exercise their franchise to elect members to 644 wards in the 33 municipal bodies. More than 4,000 polling booths will be set up across these municipal bodies on the polling day.
For the bypoll, 5,74 lakh people would cast their votes across 540 polling booths.
Around 25,000 polling personnel, including returning officers, will be deployed for the smooth conduct of the election. Also, 10,000 Electronic Voting Machines will be used.
