American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Kanuru, a neighbourhood of Vijayawada in Krishna district, successfully performed its first paediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT), marking a significant milestone in advanced cancer care in the region. The transplant was performed on a 12-year-old, P. Uday Vikas, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
A statement issued by the institute on Sunday said that Uday initially showed up with neck swelling and was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, commonly known as the body’s immune system, which defends against infections and diseases. After receiving three cycles of chemotherapy, the young patient underwent a bone marrow transplant and is now in good health and under regular follow-up care at AOI.
CEO, CTSI-South, Asia Harish Trivedi said that Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a rare condition in children, yet it remains one of the most treatable cancers when managed with advanced therapies.
Medical oncologist, AOU, Kanuru, K. Sai Krishna explained that the treatment and management of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in a child requires a multidisciplinary approach and precise care. He said Uday’s case was particularly critical due to the complexity of the disease and the need for a bone marrow transplant.
