ISRO unravels FEAST software at IIT-H

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) unveiled the latest version of Finite Element Analysis of Structures (FEAST) software at the 8th national finite element developers’ meeting at IIT-Hyderabad on Saturday.

The meeting, a union of industry leaders, academicians, and researchers, to promote indigenously developed finite element-based structural analysis software, saw over 250 attendees.

ISRO chairman V. Narayanan, in his video message, emphasised the capabilities of FEAST software and the significance of indigenous software development and noted that the software will play a vital role in the structural design and analysis of these upcoming projects. Mr. Narayanan also discussed new project approvals at ISRO, which include the Human Mission, Bharatiya Antariksh Station and Next Generation Launch Vehicle.

Developed by ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), FEAST software is a structural analysis software based on finite element method used for analysing the behaviour of structures under various loads in fields of aerospace, automobile, civil, mechanical, and marine engineering. It allows engineers to test designs virtually before physical construction.

Director of VSSC S. Unnikrishnan Nair highlighted the importance of achieving self-reliance in numerical simulation software development, particularly through the FEAST software. He mentioned the development of Pravaha, an indigenous computational fluid dynamics software being developed by VSSC, which is getting ready for commercial launch.

The meeting saw design competitions using the FEAST software, quiz contests and an exclusive exhibition showcasing the software’s journey and its applications in various domains. Director of IIT-H B.S. Murty was present.
