Germany coach Julien Nagelsmann has made it clear that the four-time world champions are determined to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as they prepare to kick off their qualifying campaign against Slovakia on Thursday.
Speaking on the eve of their Group A opener in Bratislava, Nagelsmann insisted that setting ambitious goals was vital for the team’s progress. He emphasised that Germany must approach qualification with belief and focus, despite their struggles in recent years.
“It is healthy to set goals,” the 37-year-old said during a press conference. “It is difficult for a team or even an individual to go through life without a goal that is worth fighting for. I think it is healthy that we all want to win the World Cup. I am 100% convinced no player would answer differently.”
Germany, who also face Northern Ireland in Cologne on September 7, are overwhelming favourites to qualify from a group that also includes Luxembourg. However, Nagelsmann urged his players not to get carried away with the big picture.
Germany’s last two World Cup campaigns ended in disappointment, with group-stage exits in both 2018 and 2022. That, combined with their quarter-final elimination at Euro 2024, has led to scepticism from some supporters.
Nagelsmann acknowledged the concerns but underlined the importance of consistency. “We need to focus on the process until we get there, on every game,” he said. “It is important not to have moments of doubt because of the big goal. The process is decisive to reach success.”
The coach also pointed to rhythm and stability as key factors after Germany lost back-to-back matches in June against Portugal and France in the Nations League. “I wish that as a team we stabilise, that we have fewer of these moments after the last two defeats. The most important thing is to win matches and qualify — and we hope to do it with dominance,” Nagelsmann added.
With a young squad backed by experienced names, Nagelsmann believes Germany are capable of restoring their reputation as a force on the world stage. While many fans remain cautious, his message is one of optimism and determination as the journey to the 2026 World Cup begins.
