Kerala police officer killed by history-sheeter while preventing attack at roadside eatery in Kottayam

A civil police officer and driver attached to the Kottayam West police station was killed while trying to prevent the attack of a history-sheeter at a roadside eatery at Thellakom near Ettumanoor in Kottayam, Kerala, late on Sunday (February 2, 2025) night. The deceased was Shyam Prasad (44), a native of Manjoor South.

The police have taken Jibin George (27) , a native of Perumbayikkad into custody in connection with the incident.

According to the police, the incident occurred in front of a bar hotel at Thellakom. Shyam was fatally assaulted by Jibin when he tried to prevent the latter from attacking the woman, running the eatery. The officer, who was seriously injured, including in the chest, was immediately admitted to a nearby private hospital but died at 4 a.m.

The incident occurred while Shyam was returning home after completing his duty at a church festival at Kudamaloor. While Shyam arrived at the shop, Jibin, a native of Perumbaikkad, was threatening the woman and her brother asking them to relocate the eatery. “When Jibin physically attacked the woman and her brother, Shyam tried to prevent him. Then, Jibin turned against Shyam and brutally attacked him,” said A. Shahul Hameed, Kottayam district police chief.

Accused in 7 other cases

The police are also investigating whether Jibin had been sent to the shop by a nearby eatery shop owner. The police said Jibin is an accused in seven other cases, including a culpable homicide case at Gandhinagar police station. He was charged under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 103 (murder).
