The Mohan Majhi Government has prepared a blueprint to fill 65,000 vacancies in the public sector over the next two years, as the Bharatiya Janata Party moves to fulfill its poll pledge of filling 1.5 lakh vacancies within five years.

The General Administration and Public Grievance (GAPG) department has directed nodal officers of all departments to update vacancy positions so that those posts can be filled up.

“It is reported in the recruitment web portal that there is a vacancy of 94,819 posts at the base level against a sanctioned strength of 3,87,537 as of January 27, 2025. Out of 94,819 base level vacancies, 40,234 posts have been approved by the empowered committee for recruitment while 33420 posts have been sent to different recruiting agencies for conducting recruitment,” says the letter sent by GAPG department.

As per the information, Health and Family Welfare has the highest 22,711 vacant posts against the sanctioned strength of 65,528 posts. The School and Mass Education department closely follows with 21,154 vacant posts as against 159416 sanctioned posts. The Home Department has 9880 posts lying vacant against the sanctioned strength of 56238 posts.

Similarly, Revenue and Disaster Management and Higher Education departments have 5301 and 4733 vacant posts respectively.

In the lead-up to the elections, the BJP strongly criticized the previous Naveen Patnaik government, alleging that the BJD had refrained from filling vacant positions under the pretext of maintaining financial prudence. It left thousands of educated yet unemployed youths stranded in uncertainty. Unemployment was one of major issues in the 2024 elections in which the saffron party had secured a historic mandate ending 24 years of BJD rule.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Majhi said that the State received 593 investment proposals during Utkarsh Odisha (Make-in-Odisha) conclave, with total investment exceeding ₹16.73 lakh crore, potentially generating 12.88 lakh employment opportunities in the State.
