Palaniswami calls for CBI probe into Anna varsity sexual assault case

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday expressed doubts whether the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Anna University sexual assault case, was under duress and demanded that the investigation be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Mr. Palaniswami charged it was because of the mistake of the State government the FIR in the Anna University sexual assault case, was leaked.

“What is the necessity in seizing the mobile phones of journalists? The mistake of the leak of the FIR was completely vested with the government. It is condemnable that the blame is being shifted on the journalists,” Mr. Palaniswami charged in a social media post.

He referred to reports that mobile phones of journalists were seized by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that was probing the Anna University sexual assault case.

Though the Madras High Court had constituted the SIT, the members of the SIT were from the Tamil Nadu Police, Mr. Palaniswami pointed out and further expressed apprehensions whether the DMK government was exerting pressure in this case.

A proper investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) without any intervention by the State government only could ensure that the affected woman gets justice, the former CM contended.
