As part of measures to ensure the safety of women travelling late at night, the Greater Chennai City Police has introduced a new initiative of collecting phone numbers of those who were returning home in autos or taxis and calling them to check whether they reached home safely.
Near M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, police personnel in uniforms stopped the women passengers who were riding the autos and taxis in the late hours of Saturday after watching the match. They collected the mobile phone numbers of both passengers and autos and also distributed helpline numbers besides collecting the registration numbers of autos and taxis in which they travelled.
Additional Commissioner of Police, South, N.Kannan said, “ We have introduced this system on a pilot basis to ensure safe return of the women to their destinations in the late hours. It is a brainchild of Commissioner of Police, A.Arun. People who came to the match had to return home late. So we collected the details of the passengers. We have taken their numbers and called them to see if they reached their homes in one-hour time.
“We may do similar exercises in future during a crowded function or night event where the high footfall or women are travelling in the night time. We may think of implementing in other places as well, “ said Mr. Kannan.
