With the Supreme Court ruling that residence-based reservation in post graduate medical admissions as unconstitutional, the Doctors Association for Social Equality (DASE) has said that this was against the rights of the State and would affect the in-service reservation for government doctors in Tamil Nadu.
The association urged the State government to file a review petition immediately and also asked the Members of Parliament from the State to raise the issue in the Parliament.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, G.R. Ravindranath, general secretary of DASE, said southern States including Tamil Nadu had a large number of medical seats at the undergraduate, post graduate and super speciality level. This ruling by the SC would affect doctors belonging to Tamil Nadu and other southern States.
“Already, Tamil Nadu is giving 50% of PG seats for All India Quota (AIQ). More importantly, 100% of super speciality seats were taken up for AIQ and the State had to approach the court every year to get the government quota (50% in-service reservation). This ruling will affect the reservation in the State and also the PG aspiration of women doctors.” he said.
