Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from West Bengal’s Malda district Sabitri Mitra alleged that she was attacked while returning home from official work on Saturday (February 1, 2025.) In the last one month, a TMC councillor and a party worker were shot dead in the same district in broad daylight. This comes as series of violent attacks unfold on multiple ruling party leaders and workers across the State in the recent past.
Recounting the attack and her escape, the former Minister Ms. Mitra said on Sunday (February 2, 2025), “The attackers had some sort of plan to kill me.” She added that an unidentified vehicle rammed into her car when she was returning home from Manikchak to Sadarghat area in English Bazar late on Saturday night (February 1, 2025.) The car sped away after hitting her vehicle, but moments later the attackers attempted another collision and tried to block the road.
Police question 10 people in connection with murder of TMC worker in Malda
“My driver somehow saved me. But, I feel there must be some big leader involved in this. But I am not indicating any individual or party,” she added. She also alleged that some “unknown forces” may be trying to attack and “finish” all leaders of Malda district.
She immediately informed the police who are trying to find the attackers and the car. She has handed over the car number to the Malda Superintendent of police who are investigating the case.
Ms. Mitra has a long political history in Malda and was the first TMC MLA from the district in 2011 when the party came to power in the State. Before that she was associated with the Congress and served as their district president from Malda. With more than a 40-year political career, she also won multiple elections during her Congress era.
Leader of Opposition and Bhartiya Janta Party MLA, Suvendu Adhikari reacted to the series of attacks on TMC leaders and said that the Chief Minister is not able to provide protection for her own MLAs and leaders. He added, “I urge Sabitri Mitra to mention this attack in the Assembly session, we will support her.”
Series of violent attacks and murders
This attack comes as the ruling party of West Bengal has witnessed multiple leaders and workers being attacked in broad daylight, three of whom were killed after brutal attacks.
A TMC worker Santosh Yadav was attacked at Naihati in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas on January 31, 2025. He was brutalised with bricks and killed. Another party leader, Krishnapada Mondal was shot at and was critically injured on January 25 in West Bengal’s Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency. Relatives of Mondal called the attack a case of “party infighting”.
Earlier in January, the party’s Malda district vice-president Dulal Sarkar was shot dead on January 2, 2025 while Ataul Haque alias Hasu Sheikh, another local leader, was shot dead on January 14, 2025. Two Trinamool leaders, Bakul Sheikh and former panchayat chief Esaruddin Sheikh, suffered critical injuries in the latter incident. A TMC worker, Narendrapur Tiwari, was among seven persons arrested in connection with the murder of Dulal Sarkar.
