Two more persons were arrested by district police on Tuesday in connection with the petrol bomb hurled on the SIPCOT police station in Ranipet town last Sunday.

Police said the arrested persons were identified as S. Bharath (20) and K. Vishal (20). They were accomplices of T. Hari, who was shot in the left leg by the police on Monday evening and later captured when he tried to attack a sub-inspector.

Initial inquiry revealed that a group of rice merchants in Ranipet town gave a complaint to Ranipet SIPCOT police on extortion by a gang led by a history sheeter S. Tamilarasan (38), who is also the father of Hari. Based on the complaint, police registered a case against Tamilarasan, his son and their accomplice.

Police said that Tamilarasan has at least eight criminal cases including three cases at SIPCOT police station alone pending against him. He was also arrested twice under the Goondas Act earlier. He was involved in robbery, chain snatching, extortion and attempted murder.

Angered by this, along with his gang members Bharath and Vishal, Hari hurled a petrol bomb at the SIPCOT police station around 11 p.m on Sunday and fled the spot. No major damage to the police station was reported.

Ranipet District Superintendent of Police, Vivekananda Shukla, formed seven special teams, led by an officer of the Additional Superintendent of Police (ADSP) rank, to track down the suspects.

A special team led by Inspector K. Sasikumar rounded up Hari in Pallavaram near Chennai and escorted him to Ranipet when Hari tried to attack sub-inspector S. Muthieswaran with a concealed knife in his left hand near Kaveripakkam town in Ranipet on Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 44).

Inspector Sasikumar fired at the suspect, injuring him in the left knee. Both the suspect and SI Muthieswaran were initially admitted to Walajah Government Hospital in Ranipet, with the suspect later shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital in Vellore. Condition of them were stable.
