Use research for addressing problems faced by people, says Minister

Minister for Higher Education R. Bindu has urged researchers to utilise their knowledge for the welfare of society.

The findings emerging from such academic and research programmes have to be used to resolve the issues faced by the people, she said in her address after inaugurating the machine tool lab and common computing centre at the Government Model Engineering College, Thrikkakara, on Tuesday (February 4).

She said that the government has been trying to implement a student-centric educational system. The curriculum revision and other measures were implemented as part of this process. Students need to create knowledge and use it for the expansion of the country’s economy, she said.

The Minister lauded the achievements of the Government Model Engineering College in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotic science, and cloud computing. She said that the institution’s research ecosystem has been able to utilise artificial intelligence for the development of AI-based speech therapy, and technology to identify the use of pesticides in vegetables and fruits.

The government will support the young entrepreneurs on the campuses to set up innovative ventures. Some of the projects include Young Innovators, incubation centres and industry-on-campus, the Minister said.

The machine tool lab and the common computing centre were constructed using around ₹2.2 crore assistance under the annual Plan share of the Institute of Human Resources Development, according to a communication.
